The research findings presented in the exhibition are from the German Mummy Project. The German Mummy Project at the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen in Mannheim is one of the most prominent research centers performing scientific testing on mummies. Since its founding in 2004, scientists in a global interdisciplinary team of experts have been working on studying mummies. The steadily advancing development of new technologies and methods of analysis enables them to extract information on people’s living conditions, age, ancestry and health as well as causes of death and burial practices. Employing a painstaking approach, they find answers to questions about living conditions and causes of death, ranging from natural deaths due to illness to mysterious accidents or even murders. This rescues the individuals and their fates from oblivion and gives them back fragments of their life story.
