German Mummy Project

Research project of the Curt-Engelhorn-Stiftung für die Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen

The “German Mummy Project” has existed at the rem since 2004. Over fifty different mummified bodies and body parts from European museums, collections and crypts are the objects of tests. The goal is to establish the most comprehensive base of information possible on the individual mummies in order to reconstruct each of the respective individuals’ personal histories and circumstances. Prominent scientists from Germany and abroad are employing the widest variety of methods of medical and scientific testing and analysis to do this. What is more, the “German Mummy Project” maintains many international collaborative research partnerships, for instance, with Eurac Research’s Institute for Mummy Studies in Bolzano, the University of Zurich’s Institute of Evolutionary Medicine with the Swiss Mummy  project and the University of Bonn’s Institute of Forensic Medicine. Advanced equipment from the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen was used, for instance, to study the living conditions, medical histories and causes of death of various members of the Medici family.
